What should you do when it starts to rain all of a sudden but the fire pit is burning hot?

It's not safe to leave a fire unattended. Using sand to extinguish the flame is an option if you need to leave the fire. It is ideal to attend the fire until the flames have died down and it's just embers in the pit, then it's safe to add the Lid and head for cover.
